I graduated from Háskóli Íslands in 1984, and received my Cand. Philol from the University of Bergen in the spring of 1987. I got my doctorate from the University of Bergen in 1993. From 31 July 1991 until 31 December 1994, I was an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Bergen. I was appointed Associate Professor, in the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History at the University of Oslo on 1 January 1995, and have been professor there since 1 September 2006. I have nearly 140 items on my list of publication. Since 1999 I have published nineteen monographs, textbooks, and anthologies, the two most recent: Viking Friendship. The Social Bond in Iceland and Norway, c. 900-1300 (Cornell University Press, 2017); Skandinavia i vikingtiden (Pax, 2017). I am on the board of following series: The Northern World. North Europe and the Baltic c. 400-1700 AD. Peoples, Economies and Cultures (Brill (2001)); Early European Research (Brepols (2009)), Nordic medieval culture (2016). I have supervised over 120 MA students and thirteen PhD students at University of Oslo, University of Cambridge, University of Gothenburg, and University of Erlangen.
